About Lewes Live Literature

Lewes Live Literature was founded in April 1995 and incorporated as a limited company and registered charity in 1998.

LLL began as a promoter of art and literature events, running spring and autumn seasons and one-off events, and steadily acquiring a reputation for inventive, eclectic programming. The Lewes Live Literature Festival was established as a regular late autumn extravaganza in 2001 and ran uninterrupted until 2007. Working across traditional artform boundaries, the festival specialised in bringing together spoken word with performance, music, film and visual art.

Since 2007, LLL has concentrated on live literature production work - developing a range of interdisciplinary performances with writers. Notable productions include 'Dementia Diaries' by Maria Jastrzebska (which toured to universiry schools of medicine and other venues with a Wellcome Trust Arts Award), 'Weight', a staging of three short stories by Catherine Smith, 'Altered Egos' by poet Bernadette Cremin, 'This is always the result' by Gus Watcham and 'Prison Dialogues', a play by LLL's Artistic Director, Mark C. Hewitt, which was premiered at Brighton Fringe Festival, 2021. LLL has also co-produced / facilitated the development of performance works by intercultural performing arts company, Crosspath, including John Agard's one man show Roll Over Atlantic and Dora vs Picasso by Grace Nichols.

LLL is also committed to socially engaged and community focused projects. This includes installation work, such as 'Polska by the Sea' (2009) at Eastbourne Station and 'Body of Writing' (2017) at Salisbury Cathedral, as well as the pioneering of Penned Upa strand of literature festivals in prisons, held at HMP Lewes (2015) and HMP Erlestoke, in Wiltshire (2017/2018) before being set up as an independent organisation.
