Spoken word audio project as part of the Lewes District Soundwave festival, a project for teenagers aimed at developing - over two workshops - a piece of writing for audio performance. The recordings were broadcast over the internet on Soundwave's Jellyfish Radio on 7/8 August and produced as a CD for the participants. The writing workshop was led by Catherine Smith with LLL's Artistic Director Mark Hewitt and the performance / recording session by Mark Hewitt with sound recordist John Avery,

Mick Jackson and Kay Syrad at Eastbourne Library, Southern Wind's superb performance of William Walton and Edith Sitwell's Façade at The Underground Theatre, Pam & Anna's Cabaret Ding-Dong with poet Bernadette Cremin at the Bibendum wine bar and a Polskie Party upstairs at The Lamb with Magdalena Reising and her Blue Café Jazz Band plus poets Maria Jastrebska and Bodhan Piasecki. Events organised for East Sussex Arts Partnership's 'Word County' written and spoken word programme.

International Poetry & Prose

Thursday 12 November, 2009. Needlemaker's Café, Lewes

Readings by Martina Evans and Catherine Smith. Australian poet Alison Croggon (on tour in the UK) was ill so Maria Jastzrebska stood in at short notice. Plus performances of new incidental music by Peter Copley composed for Catherine Smith's short story performance, Weight, and played by Jo Eagle (accordion) and Anne Hodgson (flute).

Adventures of a Grumpy Old Rock Star / Flat Earth News

Sunday 1 November 2009. All Saints Centre, Lewes. 

One-off Sunday afternoon of events: Flat Earth News featured journalist Nick Davies and his attack on corruption and distortion in contemporary journalism; Further Adventures of a Grumpy Old Rock Star featured grumpy old rock star Rick Wakeman holding forth.

Dementia Diaries in Lewes

Free Speech, June 2009

25 - 27 June, 2009. Lewes and Peacehaven

In partnership with Festival of Words and East Sussex Arts Partnership, Lewes Live Lit presented Free Speech: a major words festival for (and starring) young people in Lewes District and East Sussex. The project involved highly successful artist and writer residencies in a number of East Sussex schools culminating in three days of events: two of them involving outcomes from the educational work, in Peacehaven and Lewes, and a third day of public ticketed events at the All Saints Centre, Lewes. Highlights of the final day included Louise Rennison, Queen of Teen, interviewed by local teenagers and LLL's first work-in-progress performance of John Agard's The Young Inferno.

Free Speech was produced by LLL in collaboration with the Festival of Words consortium

Anglo-Polish Season

11 - 26 April 2009. Eastbourne Festival

Polska by the Sea

LLL presented an installation of large photographic portraits by award-winning photographer Lisa Barnard celebrating Eastbourne's Polish community. Located prominently in Eastbourne train station the portraits were accompanied by a collection of 24 postcards featuring intriguing images of domestic ephemera alongside interview text by LLL's Artistic Director, Mark Hewitt. A boxed set of these postcards is now available through this site.

New literary theatre. A sell-out run of rehearsed readings of Maria Jastrzebska's Anglo-Polish literary drama, Dementia Diaries, at the tiny Little Pollka Café in Eastbourne.
